Walter Ruffler - Sailing into the Wind
Paper automata have a long tradition, dating back to the 19th century. Today paper modelling is enjoying a renaissance. More and more people have discovered a love for building these little works of art, as the models can be built in a few hours, but bring delight for many hours thereafter.
Sometimes life is like a cruise on troubled waters - keeping one's balance requires a steady hand. As this skipper demonstrates by turning his mainsail out of the wind, pulling the rudder and leaning out of the tilting boat to keep the balance. This model has been created by Walter Ruffler, one of Europe's most accomplished modern day automata designers. In Sailing into the Wind, the handle moves an eccentric disc, which raises a lever and a ram, and tilts the boat to the side. The mainsail turns out of the wind, and the skipper pulls the rudder and leans over the ship's side to keep the balance. This paper machine kit contains five construction sheets printed with the model parts, kebab and cocktail sticks, and fully illustrated step by step instructions. The model requires scoring, cutting, folding and glueing.
Items you will need to provide - a pair of scissors, a craft knife, a ruler, and glue (white school glue is fine).Suggested for ages 12+
These are challenging kits to construct, and will take a good few hours!
